Fenway toilet auction controversy?

Thursday, August 24, 2006

A fire storm has developed over Leland’s sale of a Fenway Park commode with the Red Sox insisting that the throne is not quite the bottom-kissed collectible the New York auction house would have bidders believe, according to the BOSTON HERALD.

Red Sox spokesman Charles Steinberg said the toilet - which Leland’s initially advertised as coming from the dugout and now contends was taken from the clubhouse - was never a fixture in either location.

“(Planning and development manager) Paul Hanlon says that no toilet left the premises of the Red Sox clubhouse or the visitors’ clubhouse,” said Steinberg.

“In a possible stretch of the truth, the old umpires’ clubhouse was on the second floor above the Red Sox clubhouse. So perhaps someone is cutely calling it from the Red Sox clubhouse - but not really.”

Leland’s had initially advertised the toilet - which it said it acquired after Fenway Park was renovated - as the very throne that sat inside the dugout and “got up close and very personal with the likes of Boggs, Ramirez, Damon, (Andre) Dawson and Pedro.”
