PAC-10 Media Day
Wednesday, at a hotel near LAX, college football season began. Over the years, I have had the chance to cover many of these events. Other than the free gift (Pac-10 Bag) and the free lunch (BBQ Chicken and Apple Pie) they normally are a waste of time. I always end up wondering why I go. Its a five hour torture session: every coach in the Pac-10 spitting out cliche after cliche. I've heard them all and so have you!
Ben's 10 Favorite Cliche's from Pac-10 Media Day.
1.) We want to out-work everyone. We will be the hardest working team in the country.
2.) My players have bought into my system.
3.) This team has turned the corner.
4.) We are headed in the right direction.
5.) From top to bottom anyone can beat you in the Pac-10. There are no pushovers.
6.) This group of players is like a family
7.) The ______ (Fill in city name) has rallied around this football program.
8.) You have to score points to win in the Pac-10
9.) We were a better team than our record indicated a year ago.
10.) Our goal is to win the Pac-10, We aren't thinking about a national championship. (Oregon and Oregon State?)
Coming in a few weeks I'll breakdown UCLA and USC.
Deshawn Foster is hoping to stay healthy and contend for the heisman trophy.
Carson Palmer tries to live up to the hype. SC offensive coordinator Norm Chow should get the most out of him. permalink

R.I.P. KOREY STRINGER
It does not get much sadder than the death of Corey Stringer, the Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman who passed away Wednesday morning. I always get sad when I hear of someone passing on.
This story touched me also because, despite having little football talent, I'm also a big guy. I remember when playing ball, preseason always seemed to be the hottest two weeks of the football year.
That said, I believe that there is almost no way to stop such a tragedy. As long as there is football and men are men there will always be a chance that this can happen again.
