Thanksgiving Weekend Thoughts, Opinions and Notes

By Ben Maller

Jason Giambi should have won the American League MVP Award. Giambi led the league in the two most important statistics for a hitter: on-base percentage (.477), and slugging percentage (.660).

Ichiro has little power (eight homers); Giambi has lots of power (47 doubles, 38 home runs). Ichiro swings at everything (just 30 walks); Giambi doesn't (129 walks). In my opinion, Brett Boone was the MVP for the Seattle Mariners.

Since when did slap-hitting speedy leadoff hitters become league MVP's? Rickey Henderson should have won every year in the 80's and Tony Phillips should have been the MVP with the Halos in 1995.

In my opinion, Ichiro should not have been the AL Rookie of the Year either. Suzuki played for years in the Japanese leagues.

I have to question the Detroit Tigers decision to release all-star first baseman Tony Clark. I realize that Clark has been a disappointment in the Motor City, but he's still, when healthy, a 30 HR 100 RBI guy. The Boston Red Sox picked him up for nothing!

After a .197 average in 32 games the Oakland Athletics released infielder F.P. Santangelo. I wonder if F.P. regrets going to the A's. He said the worst decision he ever made was signing with the Dodgers.

Good guy reliever Mike Fetters spent the last few months playing in Pittsburgh and that was enough for him. Fetters demanded the Pirates trade him. I think the Dodgers could do worse than bring him back.

As far as I have been told, the Dodgers have not hired any former Angels this week. They tried to get Gene Mauch, but he turned them down.

The Texas Rangers have offered Chan Ho Park a mega contract, I hope they don't expect him to win any big games. I think Chan Ho is a great guy and wish him the best of luck but he's got no balls, the Dodgers should let him go.

The latest Gary Sheffield trade rumor has him going to the New York Mets. The Dodgers would get a closer Armando Benitez, a starter Glendon Rusch, and an outfielder Jay Payton.

Let's play a little game... This Barry Bonds with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992

This is Barry Bonds with the San Francisco Giants during his 73 HR year in 2001

Is this natural? You Decide... Hmm...

North Carolina hoops team, got off to an 0-2 start with losses to Hampton and Davidson... Did Steve Lavin take a gig in Chapel Hill?

It's early, but Texas Tech is off to a 3-0 start with some guy named Knight coaching them and they have a pair of creampuffs up next.

Rod Smart, who made a name for himself as ''He Hate Me'' in the XFL, was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles to replace safety Terrence Carroll, who was arrested for possession of marijuana. According to sources the Eagles are calling Carroll ''He Release Me.''

The Denver Broncos should dump their current uniforms and go back the traditional Bronco look they wore on Thanksgiving against the Cowboys.

It was a bad Thanksgiving week for the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles who each had three players arrested.

Browns' defensive tackle Gerald Warren, the club's first-round choice in the 2001 draft, faces at least one gun violation charge in Pittsburgh, where he was stopped Tuesday morning after attending a party hosted by Steelers' wide receiver Plaxico Burress.

Browns' fullback Mike Sellers was charged Tuesday felony cocaine possession after being arrested along with teammate Lamar Chapman, who was charged with felony drug abuse, following a Monday night traffic stop in Cleveland.

As for the Eagles' three rookies, strong safety Terrence Carroll, tailback Correll Buckhalter and Darrel Crutchfield were suspended one game last Saturday by coach Andy Reid for a drug-related incident the previous night. Carroll, the only player charged, was waived by the team on Monday afternoon. Eagles safety Damon Moore has been charged with abandoning his 3-month-old Rottweiler puppy in a soccer field near his home in New Jersey.

Police found the dog, and the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals traced a microchip embedded in it to a pet shop in the Echelon Mall, where Moore made his purchase.

The NFC West is the best division in football... The Rams are the NFC's best team with the Niners and Saints also near the top.

If coach Mike Riley can keep his job after a 1-15 season with the San Diego Chargers, then Marty Mornhinweg still could be able to keep his gig with the Detroit Lions.

CNNSI Football Insider Peter King told me on Fox Sports Radio Friday morning that QB Drew Bledsoe of the Patriots has a relatively low salary cap number and, should New England choose, they could move him this offseason. Tom Brady is going to start the rest of the way.

Ben Maller Trivia Question of the Week: What NFL QB has been sacked the most in his career?

Nebraska had a great year, but it is not the best team in College Football as Colorado proved on Friday. I'm looking forward to a Colorado vs. Oklahoma Big 12 title game and then an Oklahoma vs. Miami Rose Bowl for the national title. (Florida could still get in)

Roy Williams, the strong safety for the defending national champion Oklahoma Sooners is the best college football player. Even Eric Crouch of Nebraska would agree with me. Crouch, when asked by ESPN.com to name his Heisman ballot, himself excluded: 1. Oklahoma's Roy Williams; 2. Miami's Ken Dorsey; 3. Florida's Rex Grossman.

Cal State Northridge dropped the ball with their decision to discontinue the football program. They should have spent some money and tried to compete. It was pathetic to see how the university treated the program.

If UCLA didn't fire Steve Lavin after the Bruins regular season struggles the last few years, then they will never fire Bob Toledo for his bungling of the football program.

Pete Carroll says coaching at USC is the most fun he's ever had. Let's see if he still feels that way after a few years of recruiting.

Isaiah Rider was released by the Denver Nuggets this week. Rider joins Jimmy Jackson, Olden Polynice, Dickey Simpkins, Dennis Scott and many other mid-level veterans who are not in the NBA anymore for cap reasons.

The Clippers should add a classic bobblehead doll set with Benoit Benjamin, Elmore Spencer, Ken "The Animal" Bannister, Matt Fish and Greg Kite.

Kobe Bryant spent Wednesday night watching Cal-State Fullerton play San Francisco. Kobe and his wife Vanessa were on hand to see Bryant's cousin John Cox, a sophomore guard for the Dons.

I have a feeling if the National Hockey League were to contract by two teams the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Mighty Ducks would get the vote.

Coming Monday I will have a complete recap of my Friday morning sitting in for "The Great" Tony Bruno on Fox Sports Radio. It was alot of fun working with Jim Lampley and one of the highlights of my career.

Now a message from our sponsors...

A friendly reminder to listen to my radio show this weekend on your local Fox Sports Radio station. It's me along with Bob Page at the Fox Sports Update desk from 5am till 8am(est) Saturday morning. Sunday morning from 4am till 7am I'll be back again.

Sunday nights listen to the big weekend wrap up show from 10pm till 2am along with Jason Smith on your local Fox Sports radio station.

Ben Maller Trivia Question of the Week Answer: John Elway of the Denver Broncos was sacked the most times in his career.

Big Ben Maller's Five Star College Pick of the Week

Purdue (6-3) at Indiana (3-6)

The Line: Indiana -2 1/2

Last Meeting: Purdue won 41-13 in West Lafayette. This game marks the 113th meeting between the programs on the football field. Purdue has a 17-game advantage in the series and has a 30-14-2 record in games played in Bloomington. The Boilermakers have won four in a row in the series

Did you know? Hoosiers QB Antwaan Randle-El, moved into first place on the NCAA Division I-A rushing list for quarterbacks this season. He now has 3,786 career rushing yards

Big Ben's Breakdown: This is a simple matchup of a good Purdue defense against a great Indiana offense. The Boilermakers have been allowing just 2.9ypc so far this season and a total of just 23.1 points against, while Indiana has the big play offense led by Antwaan Randle-El and running back Levron Williams, who has rushed for 1,222 yards and 16 touchdowns in nine games. Williams is second in the country in all-purpose yardage (205.6ypg), fourth in scoring (12.0ppg) and seventh in rushing (135.8ypg).

The Hoosier defense has sucked for years but over the last three weeks they have held their opponents to under 30 points for the first time since 1994.

The Boilermaker offense is led by RB Montrell Lowe who has 531 yards rushing this season and three scores. Purdue has struggled moving the ball over the last few weeks. Coach Joe Tiller has prided himself in a big play offense but that's not the case with this bunch,

Ben's Bottom Line: Indiana will be able to move the Ball with Randle-El and Williams and make this game a shootout. The Boilermakers don't have the weapons to keep up with the Hoosiers.

BenMaller.com's Final Score: Indiana 34, Purdue 28

Other College Picks: Kansas State +20 1/2 vs. Missouri, Stanford -7 1/2 vs. Notre Dame, Tennessee -25 vs. Vanderbilt, Oklahoma -27 vs. Oklahoma State, WASHINGTON +26 at Miami.

Big Ben Maller's Five Star NFL Pick of the Week

Baltimore Ravens(6-4) at Jacksonville Jaguars(3-6)

The Line: Ravens -3

Did You Know? Brian Billick is 3-2 for his career against the Jaguars. Jacksonville's Tom Coughlin owns an 8-3 lifetime mark versus Baltimore.

Last Meeting: Ravens beat Jaguars 18-17 on Oct. 28, 2001, at Baltimore.

Big Ben's Breakdown: This a huge game for Baltimore because the Ravens had a three-game winning streak snapped last week with a 27-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns. The defeat dropped the B-More to 1.5 games behind the Steelers in the AFC Central.

The question of the week for the Ravens is what will Elvis Grbac do? The Baltimore offense is ranked 10th in the NFL in total yards per game, but the team's minus-nine ratio in turnover margin reveals the real story. Grbac, the 14th-rated passer in the AFC, has thrown 13 interceptions and fumbled four times to contribute largely to the Ravens' 25 turnovers.

In his eight starts, Grbac has a 4-4 record... This after he signed a five-year, $30 million contract in the offseason, coming from the Kansas City Chiefs.

I interviewed coach Brian Billick on Fox Sports Radio with Jim Lampley on Friday and Billick said there is no quarterback controversy. Still, this is a huge game for Grbac to put up some positive numbers against a poor banged-up Jags' team. The Jaguars' defense is ranked 23rd in the NFL -- 18th against the run and 20th versus the pass.

On defense the Ravens lost sack leader Michael McCrary, who will miss the remainder of the season because of knee surgery. McCrary, injured the knee in the first game of the season. He finishes the year with eight sacks. Even without McCrary, Baltimore has enough to take advantage of a depleted Jacksonville offensive line.

Ben's Breakdown: The main reason I love the Ravens in this game is that Mark Brunell the Jags' QB expected to miss this game with a strained right quad and RB Fred Taylor is expected to miss his eighth straight game this week because of a severe groin pull. Barring another five-turnover game by Grbac, Baltimore should have little trouble with Jacksonville.

BenMaller.com's Final Score: Ravens 24, Jaguars 13

Other NFL Picks: Pittsburgh +2 at Tennessee, Buffalo +4 1/2 vs. Miami, New Orleans PK vs, New England, Arizona +7 at San Diego, Giants +2 1/2 vs. Oakland.

Big Ben Maller's Special Thanksgiving NFL Pick

Green Bay Packers (6-3) at Detroit Lions(0-9)

The Line: Packers- 6 1/2

Ben's Pick: Lions and the Points.

Last Meeting: Sept. 9: Packers, 28-6. At Green Bay, the Packers recorded 424 yards on offense. Green had 157 yards rushing for the Packers.

Did You Know? Detroit is 10-4-1 against Green Bay on Thanksgiving.

Big Ben's Breakdown: A tradition continues: Thanksgiving with John Madden and the Detroit Lions. This is believed to be the first time in NFL history that an 0-9 team has played on National Television. Since 1994, the Lions have won 6-of-7 Turkey Day games including the last four.

QB Charlie Batch is coming off of a career and franchise record passing day. Batch completed 36-of-62 passes for 436 yards with three touchdowns. It wasn't all good for Batch who tossed three interceptions in a 4th quarter that saw the Cardinals score 24 points in a 45-38 Arizona win.

Detroit has been in most of their games this season, losing their last six contests by eight points or fewer.

The two biggest problems with the Lions are, a banged up defense that ranks 30th in the NFL and a rushing game that is 31st in the league. RB James Stewart has missed the last six games with an ankle injury. He's questionable for this game. Despite not being able to run the ball, Detroit is ranked second in the NFL in passing offense.

Green Bay is coming off a stunning 23-20 loss to the Atlanta Falcons at Lambeau Field. In that game Brett Favre was intercepted three times and also fumbled twice losing one of them. While the Lions' defense stinks, Favre stinks in domes, and, the last time I checked, Detroit plays in the Pontiac Silverdome.

The Packers figure to key on their running game and they have a good one. RB Ahman Green is second in the NFL with 1,183 yards from scrimmage. He is four behind Saints' running back Ricky Williams.

On defense, the Pack lost safety and leader LeRoy Butler who is done for the year with a broken shoulder blade.

Detroit will stun the Packers and get their first victory of the year behind Charlie Batch's three touchdown passes and thanks to four Brett Favre interceptions.

BenMaller.com Final Score: Lions 31, Packers 28

Note: I like the Broncos in the late game... (Jason Smith will breakdown that matchup)

Jason Smith of Fox Sports Radio, Special Thanksgiving NFL Pick

Denver Broncos (5-5) at Dallas Cowboys (2-7)

The Line: Broncos -6 1/2

Did You Know: The Dallas Cowboys have participated in 33 Thanksgiving games since 1966 and lead the series, 21-11-1. (Dallas has lost 3-of last-4)

By BenMaller.com contributor Jason Smith

Well we're 2 and 0 the last two weeks, with the lock of the New York Jets coming through both times. That is, FIRST PLACE New York Jets, Ben Maller. Ben has recently expanded his list of running backs he'd rather have than Curtis Martin from 7 to 30, as I've expanded my list of co-hosts I'd rather have from 7 to 30, which include the Manson family and most of the Taliban leaders.

With the AFC East leaders on a well-deserved bye, we'll try our luck Thanksgiving Day with the Broncos-Cowboys matchup.

Boy would this be a good game in 1977. Craig Morton throwing deep to Haven Moses and Rick Upchurch running punts back as Roger Staubach leads hooks up with Drew Pearson in the final minutes to pull out the win.

But that was 24 years ago, and most of those players are now dead.

So here we are with a disappointing Broncos' squad and an even worse Cowboys' team. While the Lions can pull off the Turkey Day upset, Dallas' home field advantage is long gone. Denver needs the win to stay in the AFC playoff picture, and as bad as they've been the last few weeks, they win it in Big D AND cover.

Jason Smith's Final Score: Broncos 31 Cowboys 16. Brian Griese a couple of touchdowns and the Dallas quarterbacks a couple of interceptions.

Lavin Drops the Ball

By Ben Maller

It's as predictable as the Lakers winning another NBA championship or a Dodger pitcher choking in a big game. UCLA coach Steve Lavin, it seems, always gets out-coached early in the season and the Bruins lose a game to a bunch of overachievers who are well coached.

The latest example of this was last night's 91-73 blowout loss to unranked Ball State of the Mid-American Conference.

Last season, Cal-State Northridge knocked the Bruins off in Pauly Pavilion 78-74 in the 3rd game of the year. Two years ago, Gonzaga was able to upset Lavin's UCLA club early in the season also.

It's easy to explain why: Lavin is a horrible game coach. His team is often not prepared to play especially early in the season. The Bruins have developed a tradition of late, of getting out-hustled by weaker teams and you can count on Lavin being out-coached. Second-year Ball State coach Tim Buckley already showed he's a better game coach than Lavin.

Lavin must do a better job of challenging his players and getting them ready to play every game. It's amazing how often the Bruins come out flat and not mentally prepared to play. In the Ball State, game the Bruins were down by just four at half-time before being outscored 47-33 in the second stanza.

UCLA beat themselves committing 22 turnovers against the Cardinals many of them had nothing to do with the Ball State defense, they were silly, lazy mistakes. Dan Gadzuric lead the way with six gifts, Matt Barnes had 4.

The Bruins also played a soft defense that allowed a less-talented club to out-hustle them and get easy baskets. UCLA had just one steal in the game.

Kansas lost to Ball State also, the difference being that, that loss was a buzzer-beater. This game, Ball was clearly the better basketball team.

The Bruins became the sixth member of the pre-season Top 25 to lose a game, joining Maryland, Kentucky, Kansas, Saint Joseph's and Florida.

A key point should be made again: UCLA has become used to the early season loss.

Ball State showed up ready to play. The Bruins and Steve Lavin didn't.

Bond's is Not Big Ben's MVP

By Ben Maller

Barry Bonds had a great individual season and was baseball's best player in 2001, however Bonds was not the National League Most Valuable Player in 2001.

Bonds broke the single-season home run record with 73 and added a .328 average and 137 RBI's for the San Francisco Giants. The Giants finished 90-72 and in 2nd place in the NL west and out of the playoffs. So Bonds could have broken his ankle in March and hit 0 HR's with .000 average and 0 RBI's and San Francisco still would have been on an early vacation.

Its always been my belief that to be the most valuable player, you must have helped your team get into the PLAYOFFS.

The BenMaller.com NL MVP is Luis Gonzalez of the Arizona Diamondbacks. It's not that Arizona won the World Series, because this is a regular season award. Instead it's because Gonzo got it done during the season to lead the D'Backs offensively to the NL west title.

Gonzalez batted .325 with 57 homers and 142 RBI's

Arizona's next leading RBI man was Reggie Sanders who had 90. The D'Backs had just 3 players other than Gonzo who drove in only 73 runs.

Bonds had the benefit of playing with Jeff Kent the 2000 MVP who drove in 106 runs and Rich Aurilia who had 97 RBI's.

Gonzo had to carry Arizona on his back while Bonds had 2 fellow all-stars to carry the load.

If Bonds is the NL MVP, then Shawn Green of the Dodgers should have finished second.

It's a crime that Barry Bonds won the award instead of Luis Gonzalez.

Here is hoping that Barry leaves the Giants as a free agent and signs with the New York Mets. Bonds has one more really good year left in him and then will suck the rest of the contract.  permalink

Big Ben's Monday Morning Quarterback

By Ben Maller

Mike Martz coached the best game in the NFL Sunday. With the Rams -8 up by a touchdown in the final 2 minutes with the ball inside the 20, Martz went to the victory formation because the Patriots were out of timeouts. New England was out of timeouts and the Rams won 24-17 and my BenMaller.com NFL 5-Star lock covered.

Kurt Warner is the most exciting player to watch in the NFL. He passed for 401 more yards against the Pats and made all the big plays for the Rams.

Jeff Garcia of the 49ers is the 2nd best quarterback in the NFL. Garcia passed for 305 yards and three touchdowns in an overtime win against the Panthers.

The biggest story of week 10 was the Green Bay Packers losing at Lambeau Field 23-20 to the Atlanta Falcons snapping a nine-game home winning streak. Chris Chandler looked about 10-Years younger.

It was a lot of fun to watch future Hall of Famer Jerry Rice of the Raiders go off for three touchdowns and 131 yards receiving against the Chargers. Rice used to kill my beloved LA Rams in the 80's, of course he killed everyteam he played back then.

Arizona had 13 touchdowns in its first eight games, then the Lions came to town. The Cardinals scored six TD's in a 45-38 victory over Detroit.

Its not fair that the St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders are the two best teams in the NFL. What does Los Angeles get? That crappie Sportscentral show on CBS? Or the even worse, Rick Garcia postgame show on Channel 11.

Former Los Angeles football player Jose Cortez of the 49ers kicked the game-winning 26 yard field goal in overtime against the Panthers. Cortez used to play for the Los Angeles Xtreme of the XFL.

It was "Interception Sunday"

Brett Favre, Packers, was picked off three times and fumbled twice.

Ravens, Elvis Grbac, tossed four interceptions.

Charlie Batch, Lions, threw 3 interceptions in the 4th quarter.

Dolphins, Jay Fiedler, tossed a pair of interceptions that were returned for touchdowns by the Jets.

Ryan Leaf, Cowboys, threw a pair of interceptions that were returned for scores against the Eagles. Jeremiah Trotter returned one 50 yards for a score on the final play of the first half.

Cincinnati's Jon Kitna tossed two interceptions and fumbled once in a loss to the Titans.

Jonathan Quinn, Jaguars, didn't throw an interception, but he fumbled three times.

Kordell Stewart, Steelers, threw for 266 yards and ran for 51 in Pittsburgh's win against the Jags. I can still think of 15 QB's I would rather have than "Slash."

Big Ben's Fabulous 20

1.) Kurt Warner, Rams

2.) Peyton Manning, Colts

3.) Brian Griese, Broncos

4.) Rich Gannon, Raiders

5.) Brett Favre, Packers

6.) Donovan McNabb, Eagles

7.) Jeff Garcia, 49ers

8.) Jim Miller, Bears

9.) Mark Brunell, Jaguars

10.) Rob Johnson, Bills

11.) Charlie Batch, Lions

12.) Jake Plummer, Cardinals

13.) Daunte Culpepper, Vikings

14.) Tom Brady, Patriots

15.) Trent Dilfer, Seahawks

16.) Aaron Brooks, Saints

17.) Elvis Grbac, Ravens

18.) Brad Johnson, Bucs

19.) Tim Couch, Browns

20.) Drew Bledsoe, Patriots (Hurt)

The Buffalo Bills retired Jim Kelly's number 12 at half-time in their loss against the Seahawks. The way things have been going, Buffalo should activate Kelly. Buffalo has lost seven straight games at home.

What happened to the running game in the NFL? Ricky Williams of the Saints and Duce Staley of the Eagles were the only two running backs to rush for over 100 yards in week 10.

Jason Smith on Fox Sports Radio is in Jets' heaven. It should be pointed out that while New York's other team has won eight straight against the Miami Dolphins they have also played a weak schedule. The Jets have won four straight; included in that streak are wins against Carolina and Kansas City.

The Chicago Bears are still smiling as the magic continued with a win on the road against the Buccaneers.

Panthers' coach George Seifert should reconsider his decision to stay on as Carolina coach next season. This team is horrible with no real potential to improve for years.

The New Orleans' defense sure made some adjustments on the fly. Indy had 154 yards in the first quarter, then was held to 85 over the final three quarters by the Saints' defense.

QB Ryan Leaf of Dallas should be the posterboy for all lazy Americans. Leaf has yet to do anything right in his NFL career yet he has had three shots to make it and continues to be a starting quarterback.

Leaf should get some credit, he's made Cowboy fans miss Quincy Carter.

Steve Spurrier can continue to coach Florida for a while after the Redskins won their fourth straight game beating the Broncos in Denver. Marty Schottenheimer must have made a deal with the Devil.

I'm guessing Colts' coach Jim Mora will be working for Fox Sports next year as a football studio host.

The Bengals are back to being the Bungles after a loss to the Titans that saw star running back Corey Dillon run for a Pro-Bowl-like 38 yards on 17 carries.

Big Ben's Stat of the Weekend: Chicago went 19 quarters without an offensive touchdown against the Tampa Bay defense before Jim Miller threw three scoring passes to Marty Booker in their 27-24 win over the Bucs.

Big Ben's 3 Bums of Week 10 in the NFL

3.) Lions Defense:Detroit should have won their first game of the season, however they allowed the Arizona Cardinals to score 45 points including 24 points in the 4th quarter alone. QB Charlie Batch gets an honorable mention with three 4th quarter picks.

2.) Elvis Grbac, Ravens:Four interceptions and a total of five turnovers against the Cleveland Browns. How bad was it? After the game Shannon Sharpe all but said that Baltimore should make a quarterback change.

1.) Doug Flutie, Chargers:12-of-27 passing for 98 yards against the Raiders. Flutie,as I have said all along,is overrated and is now starting to show his age at 39.

NFL Week 10 in Pictures

Other Random Weekend Thoughts

Lennox Lewis got the last laugh, after kicking Hasim Rahman's ass with a 4th round KO. Lewis called Rahman the new Buster Douglas and gave him a new name "Has Been" Rahman.

It was good to see Vic "the Brick" Jacobs at the USC game on Saturday. When I was fired from 1150 I never got to say goodbye to the "Brick." He's one of the goodguys in a radio business filled with slime balls. Isaac Lowenkron who I used to work with at that station was on hand to see the Trojan rout.

Oklahoma has the best college defense I have ever seen.

In an odd move, the Atlanta Hawks signed Dickey Simpkins last week and then Sunday released the forward. Could he be headed back to the Lakers?

I tried to get a 60 point spread for the Syracuse game against Miami. I could only find 21 points.

Bob Toledo should be taken to Westwood Blvd to get his ass whipped for his handling of the UCLA football program this year.

In one year, Pete Carroll has done a better job than Toledo.

USC won with style points.

I'm still trying to figure out why the UCLA players decided to take the USC game off.
