By Ben Maller

Its opening weekend in the National Football League. I know who is going to win all the NFL divisions and who will take the Super Bowl. If you want to know who I think the team to beat is go to FoxSports.com and click keyword: Big Ben.

I also have my thoughts on who will win coach of the year, MVP and rookie of the year honors.  permalink

Big Ben Maller's Five Star College Pick of the Week

at
Oregon State (1-0) at Temple (1-0)

The Line: Oregon State - 10 1/2

Site: Franklin Field (52,593) -- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Insider Notes: The Oregon State Beavers travel to Philadelphia for the first time since 1962. The Beavers were last in the City of Brotherly Love for the Liberty Bowl 40 years ago, a contest in which they defeated Villanova.

Big Ben's Breakdown: The Beavers will role in Philly. Derek Anderson made his first career start at Quarterback for the Beavers against Eastern Kentucky, and did not disappoint. Anderson completed 15-of-26 passes, for 345 yards and three touchdowns to guide Oregon State in the rout. Steven Jackson had 21 carries for 141 yards and two scores. While these numbers are impressive because they came against Eastern Kentucky keep in mind that Temple is not much of a better oponent.

About the only negative aspect of the season-opener for the Beavers were penalties, as Oregon State was called for a whopping 14 penalties for 167 yards.

Temple is overmatched in this one.

Ben Maller's Pick Oregon State will crush the Owls.

Ben Maller.com NFL Thursday Pick

San Francisco 49ers (0-0) at New York Giants (0-0)

The Line: 49ers - 3

Insider Notes: This is the NFL's first-ever midweek national television opener. San Francisco has a 26-25-1 opening-day record. New York owns the second-best NFC record in season openers (39-26-4). Mariucci has won two of five opening-week games in his coaching career, while Fassel owns a 4-1 mark in such contests. The 49ers own a 12-11 edge in the head-to-head series against the Giants, including victories in each of the past three meetings.

Ben's Take: The San Francisco 49ers are a dark horse NFC team for the Super Bowl. The Niners went 12-4 last season but don't get the attention the Rams and Eagles get in the NFC. San Francisco is going to win this game with an explosive offense led by qb Jeff Garcia, rb Garrison Hearst, wr Terrell Owens and a young defense that recorded three shutouts in the final six weeks of the 2001 season.

The Giants are a mess just two years after going to the Super Bowl. New York has major concerns on their offensive line and that figures to be a problem all season. Add in few weapons on offense and the Giants are in trouble. NFL sack master Michael Strahan on defense and rookie tight end Jeremy Shockey are the only real play makers on this team.

I don't see this being much of a game. Look for San Francisco to pull away in the second quarter and end up easily covering the spread.

Ben's Pick San Francisco - 3 (Lay the points and win the money.)
