Random Thoughts...
 By Ben Maller Baseball If Atlanta is able to get Curt Schilling from Arizona for the second half of the season the Braves will win the World Series... The reason the Cubs stink is because of 100 years of stupid trades. Chicago sent lefty Dontrell Willis to the Marlins in the famous Antonio Alfonseca and Matt Clement trade. Can you imagine how excited the windy city would be with Willis mixed in a rotation of Mark Prior and Kerry Wood. Willis seems like a good kid lets hope the big league lifestyle does not turn him into a jaded old fart like a pitcher who just won his 300th game... Everytime I watch the Anaheim Angels play baseball this season it strikes me that this team looks very satisfied having won the title last year. The team formally owned by Disney is not playing anything close championship caliber baseball. New owner Arturo Moreno should shake things up and sign Vladimir Guerrero or Miguel Tejada this offseason... The Dodgers look like the same team they have been the last two years. Good enough to contend for a playoff spot but that's all. Jim Tracy should win manager of the year for the next 10 years if this ballclub sneaks into the playoffs. I think someone stole the Dodger bats and replaced them with wet newspapers... One good thing about the Dodgers offense being the worst in baseball this side of Detroit. Nobody can accuse anyone in the LA clubhouse of using cork... Call me crazy but I feel bad that Dave Hanson and Matt Herges to of the best guys in baseball are stuck on the Padres. It looks like San Diego is getting ready for the move to Petco Park by putting a dog team on the field... Fred McGriff has played in 63 games and has 227 at bats for the Dodgers with 10 homers. Eric Karros has played in 46 games with only 119 at bats and has 7 homers. Why did the Dodgers have to deal EK? I'm hoping Karros either gets to play everyday in Chicago or gets traded to a team in the race at the deadline... Carlos Delgado of the Blue Jays is the American League MVP of the first three months of the season... Delgado is on pace to drive in 176 runs that would still leave him 15 RBI's short of Hack Wilson's major league record... Albert Puljos of the Cardinals is the National League MVP right now... Puljos is hitting .378 and is on pace for 43 homers and 133 RBI's... Tony La Russa said last week that Puljos is the best player he has ever managed. La Russa must be getting old because Rickey Henderson the greatest leadoff hitter in baseball history is the best player on any of La Russa's teams... Kevin Brown is 9-1 with a 2.00era for the Dodgers. I guess Kevin Malone is not such an idiot afterall.... Life is good for Ronald Camacho the Chicago fan who has been awarded $775,000 by the Dodgers and Cubs for that famous cap theft in May of 2000. Basketball Did you hear Kevin Garnett recently purchased a house in Malibu? I wonder if Garnett will shock the world as a free agent and create a dream team in Hollywood and take short money to play with the Lakers... Garnett already has all the money he could ever spend... He could live in LA year round and play 82 games and the playoffs with Shaq and Kobe... I want Donald Sterling to bring back the last coach to lead the Clippers to the playoffs... Bill Fitch is hanging out in Texas fishing. He said his favorite coaching job was with the paper clips... Jason Kidd was exposed against the Spurs... Kidd has no outside game and is just a good player not a great player in the western conference... NBC used to give us Peter Vecsey and his gossip at half-time during the finals... ABC gives us Joel Segal talking about the summer lineup of movies... does anyone wonder why fans didn't watch? I think the broadcasts were worse than the basketball... Having worked with many different people over my radio career I feel I can tell when broadcasters like working with eachother and when they don't. I get the feeling that Tom Tolbert and Bill Walton hate eachother. I like Tolbert on his Bay Area radio show and loved Walton with Steve Jones but they are like fingers on a chalk board working together... Football Many NFL people feel this will be Terrell Owens last season with the 49ers... I'm looking for teams that need receivers and the Lions and Cowboys stand out... How much fun would a Owens and Steve Mariucci reunion be in Detroit... Keep an eye on the Kansas City Chiefs this season... If Priest Holmes is healthy the Chiefs are the team to beat in the AFC West... Jamal Anderson is going to try and comeback and play in the NFL next season. I wonder how many teams are going to try and sign him... I'm thinking the Bears, Bucs and Pats will consider him... The Lions also need a running back... Mike Martz said that Marc Bulger is a top 5 quarterback in the NFL right now... I guess Martz is not high on 1. Brett Favre 2. Donovan McNabb 3. Michael Vick, 4. Peyton Manning 5. Kurt Warner or Daunte Culpepper, Jeff Garcia and Trent Green... Here is my early list of coaches who have to win or they'll be fired after the upcoming 2003 season... Mike Holmgren (Seahawks), Jim Fassel (Giants), Mike Martz (Rams), Dick Jauron (Bears), Dave Wannstedt (Dolphins) and even Dennis Erickson with the 49ers. permalink |
